One of the first jobs in assembling a new experimental setup or application is to select the right detector to measure and display a laser signal like power, energy or time-resolved behaviour.

The coverage of wavelengths of the different kinds of lasers are in the range from UV to IR. Due to this fact it is unconditional necessary to use the best possible detector to be get the best possible measurement result.

The influence of the characteristics of the detector like wave length gain, response time or sensitivity determine the selection. This experimental set-up shall shows students the different properties of a set of photo detectors to learn how to get optimized results if the right one is chosen.

The set contains semiconductor and thermoelectric types which will be analyzed in their characteristics like spectral sensitivity or response time. Even the effect and the influence of different kinds of electronic supply for the detectors is shown in the experiment. The spectral characteristics will be measured by using a white light source in conjunction with a monochromator and the response time is evaluated by means of a light chopper.

The compensation of spectral distribution of the used light source and monochromator a wavelength independent detector is used. Absolute values can be measured by using an calibrated power meter which can be ordered optional.
