This educational kit has been composed to show absorption of a laser diode radiation in a Nd:YAG crystal. The students is shown the possiblity of variation of the laser wavelength by tuning the temperature of the laser diode chip. Absorption spectrum, fluorescence light and the 4-level laser system of Nd:YAG is examined. The process of optical pumping of solids by generating a population inversion as a common technique in labs and industry. The pumping efficiency depends on the choice of proper absorption and emission transitions. The most important application of these educational objectives is the laser diode pumped Nd:YAG laser, whose set-up will be shown.

In the next step the characteristics like emission caused by pumping and life-time of the laser cycle will be measured and characterized. The used light source is a laser diode with collimated radiation mounted on a thermoelectric cooler.

A Nd:YAG crystal is used as the absorbing and emitting material. Optics for collecting the fluorescence light detected by a PIN photodiode are provided as well as an interference filter to supress non absorbed pump light to measure the pure emission line at 1.064 µm.

A two-channel oscilloscope for displaying the measured signals is necessary (optional). The temperature and current stabilization of the laser diode to vary their parameters done by the provided laser control unit.
