Today applications with laser diodes are found in impor-tant branches of industry and many products of the daily life. Due to this fact it is obvious to give students the possibility to study the behaviour of these types of lasers a profound way with this educational kit.

The differences of laser diodes to classical lasers con-cerning energy levels and energy bands will be discus-sed. Within the kit a 30 mW laser diode mounted on a TE-cooler is used. The spatial distribution of the laser beam is measured with the help of a rotational unit.

The a versatile control electronics enables the student to evaluate the dependency of the laser wavelength of laser chip temperature and laser injection current. An examination of the laser wavelength will be done with the help of a Nd:YAG rod which has a well known light absorption transition. For more accurate investi-gation of the laser light an optional monochromator unit can used.

The changes of polarisation of the laser light in dependence on injection current will be analysed by a polarizer component. For standard application a digi-tal volt meter is provided and be connected to electro-nics controller to do the measurements. The use of an oscilloscope for higher quality measurement with modulated laser light to suppress environmental light is recommended.
