For
many applications the costs of a real glass fiber
exceed the finacial budget. If no high speed data
transmission or a long transmission distance is
required, the use of a low-priced plastic optical
fiber (POF) is sufficient.
Some applications of these fibers will be found very often in multimedia
systems, automotive systems, home networks or control systems. Other
applications will be found in rough enviroments, explosion protected
areas or high voltage systems.
The
distances of such transmission lines are settled
between 50-100 meters and the reached transmission
speeds are in the range up to 200 Mbps depending
on the used fiber material. Within this educational
kit the basics of plasic fibers with all interesting
facts concerning application and measurement are
discussed.
The peparation of a POF will be shown to the students. Stripping, assembling
a connector and polishishig of connectors are teached. The measurement
of transmission losses of different length of POFs as well as the set-up
of a complete two channel low frequency data transmission system will
be shown.
All
necessary components, fibers and control electronics
like modulator, transmitter, receiver, demodulator
and a audio amplifier with two speakers are included.
Other signal sources like a CD player can be connected
to the transmitter. For the measurements an oscilloscope
is necessary and can be ordered as an option.
