The data flux around the world is increasing drastic by communication like phone and web. The data transfer is based on fibre optics combined with laser diodes.

The small diameter of 5 µm for these fibres is including problems in manufacturing process, adaptation and quality of mechanical handling systems. But the technical processes are improved very fast so that the optical revolution is going on.

The described experiment for data transmission consists of a 5 km fibre. At first a diode laser will be specified concerning output power versus injection current to find out the optimum modulation parameters.

Afterwards the fibre cladding will be removed with Miller pliers and cutted with a fibre cutter. Then the light of the diode laser is coupled by fine adjustment devices into the fibre by monitoring on an oscilloscope.

When everything is optimised the signals of the delivered coloured CCD camera and CD player will be transmitted through the fibre. No one will forget this impressive experiment.
