6-DOF Precision Motion

Hexapod & Parallel Kinematic Positioning Systems

Compact, stiff, multi-axis positioning platforms for coordinated motion in X, Y, Z, pitch, yaw, and roll. PI hexapod and SpaceFAB systems combine mechanics, controller, and software into an integrated 6-axis positioning solution.

Why Parallel Kinematics?

Unlike stacked multi-axis stages built from individual single-axis positioners, a parallel-kinematic system is designed from the outset as one coordinated multi-axis mechanism. This architecture can provide a smaller package, greater stiffness, faster response, shorter settling, improved multi-axis repeatability, and freedom from accumulated runout errors.

Six coordinated axes

Linear and rotational motion are controlled as one integrated positioning system.

High stiffness

Parallel load paths support precise positioning and dynamic performance.

Compact architecture

Six degrees of freedom without stacking six separate motion stages.

Shorter settling

High structural rigidity can support faster response and dynamic operation.

No stacked-axis error buildup

Parallel motion avoids the cumulative runout associated with serial stage stacks.

Vacuum options

Many PI parallel positioners are available in high-vacuum-compatible configurations.

Hexapod vs. Stacked Multi-Axis Stages

The two approaches can both provide multi-axis motion, but their mechanical architectures differ fundamentally.

Two Parallel-Kinematic Architectures

Classical Hexapods

Stewart-Gough-type hexapods use six variable-length legs acting on a common platform. This arrangement can provide a particularly compact footprint while supporting motion in all six degrees of freedom.

SpaceFAB Positioners

SpaceFAB systems use three XY positioners acting on a common platform through three constant-length struts. The architecture is readily customized and can provide longer XY travel with a lower profile than typical Stewart-platform designs.
