Since lasers are used as a tool in industry the methods of classical triangulation known from topographical survey have been applied to contactless distance, thikkness and length measurement. Applications of these procedures are settled for example in 3D-shape measurements, rapid prototyping or presence detection of tools in machinery.

Laser triangulation systems in industry have measurement ranges from approximately 1 to 50 cm with a relative accuracy of 10-3. This gives the user an lowcost alternative for systems where much more accurate systems like laser interferomters are too expensive for the measurements systems which need not be that accurate. This educational kit has been delveloped to show and teach one application of laser triangulation, the distance measurement, to students.

The kit contains al necessary components like laser diode, position sensitive detector and control electronics to assemble a triangulation setup. The kit is equipped with a translation stage to simulate and measure displacements of 10 mm and two samples with different surfaces.

This is sufficent to show and understand the principles of laser triangulation. The kit includes also the complete manu-al where all basics of triangulation and all measurements are described.
